Frequently Asked Questions

If I become sick, can I avoid waiting in NHS queues?

With a PMI policy in place, you'll have access to a wider range of expert medical help should you need it; and depending upon the terms of your policy, the main costs of your treatment will be covered. Whilst the NHS does an amazing job, queues are inevitable for all but the most acute medical emergencies, and PMI policies are often taken to avoid those queues in the future, by being able to access a wider range of expert medical help.

What does a Private Medical Insurance policy cover?

Private health insurance plans are typically designed to cover treatment for short term, or acute, illnesses, diseases or injuries. Though the cover you get from private medical insurance depends upon the policy that you buy. Basic cover will usually pick up the cost for most in-patient treatments (tests and surgery) and day-care surgery. Some policies will extend to cover out-patient treatments (such as specialists and consultants).

But I'm healthy, so why would I want Private Medical Insurance?

A PMI policy, like all insurance policies, is your protection against the future and not the present. There's no better time to consider taking PMI than when you're healthy - if you wait to become sick it may be too late. Most policies won't cover pre-existing conditions that you've suffered in the 5 years prior to taking your policy - so getting cover while you're feeling fit and healthy is an effective way to lock in your good health.

Can I access treatments not available on the NHS?

In the UK, private healthcare is not subject to the same lengthy regulatory procedures as its public sector counterpart; so you may be able to obtain brand-new drugs, rehabilitation techniques and advanced therapeutic methods, before they become available to NHS patients. Some specialist drugs and treatments are considered too expensive for the NHS or may not have approval by NICE (England & Wales) or the SMC (Scotland).

Are there ways to reduce my Health Insurance cost?

Private health care costs vary between insurance providers but factors like your age, if you smoke, where you live (postcode) and the level of cover you choose will have an influence on your premium. In addition to comparing quotes, here are some ways to cut down the cost of your cover without having to make serious sacrifices:

1. You can choose to add a voluntary excess to your policy, i.e. an amount that you’ll have to contribute towards a claim. The excess amount can range from £0 to £1,000 and the higher your excess, the more you’ll contribute towards your healthcare costs and so the lower the premiums will be. Adding an excess of as little as £200 can cut premiums by as much as 10%.
2. You can choose to pay your premiums annually instead of monthly.
3. If you haven’t had to claim on your insurance for a certain length of time, then you could get a discount/no-claim bonus.
4. Insurers will rank each hospital and if you agree to exclude certain prestigious hospitals or the most expensive hospitals then this can help reduce your premiums.

Health Window is not an insurance company, but we provide you with a free service to compare multiple UK insurance providers quotes, helping you find the best value PMI deal and a policy that most closely matches your specific needs.

What are the top treatments claimed for?

To give an indication of the treatments commonly covered by private health insurance, the 2023 Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN) report highlights the most common private procedures:

1. Musculoskeletal Problems (e.g., back, hip, knee, and neck pain)
2. Cancer (Oncology)
3. Digestive System Conditions (e.g., gastroenteritis, Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome)
4. Eye Conditions

Beyond these, other significant drivers of private healthcare demand include Heart & Circulatory Diseases, ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) Treatments, Dental & Orthodontics, Gallbladder Removal, Dermatology, Mental Health Services, and Maternity & Fertility Treatments.
